Are There Termites in Calgary? The Honest Answer
Short answer: no. There are no established termite populations anywhere in Alberta, and the species responsible for billions of dollars of damage in the United States and coastal British Columbia cannot survive a Calgary winter.
If you searched "termites in Calgary" after finding crumbly wood, sawdust piles, or big black insects near a window, the pest you are looking at is almost certainly something else, and it may still be worth treating. This guide explains what actually lives here, what you are probably seeing, and when an inspection is worth the money.

Why Calgary Does Not Have Termites
Termites need warm, consistently moist soil. Subterranean termites, the destructive kind, live in colonies underground and stay in contact with soil that rarely drops below about 10°C, then tunnel up into the wood of a building.
Calgary gives them the opposite of what they need:
- Deep frost. Our ground freezes well below the frost line every winter and stays frozen for months.
- Dry air. Southern Alberta is one of the driest regions in the country, and termites need constant moisture to survive.
- A short feeding season. Even in a warm July, Calgary soil swings hard between hot days and cold nights.
That combination is why termites have never established here. The provinces that do have termite problems, coastal British Columbia and parts of southern Ontario, have the mild, damp conditions they need. In Calgary, the wood-destroying pest worth worrying about is the carpenter ant.
What Calgary Homeowners Are Actually Finding
Almost every "termite" in Calgary turns out to be one of five things:
1. Carpenter ants. This is the real one. Carpenter ants are large black ants, usually 6 to 16 mm long, that excavate tunnels in wood. Unlike termites, they do not eat the wood. They hollow it out and push the leftovers, called frass, out of the nest. Frass looks like coarse sawdust mixed with insect parts, and it often shows up in little piles below a window frame, rim joist, or under a deck.
2. Elm seed bugs and boxelder bugs. These harmless insects swarm Calgary homes every fall looking for warmth. They are tiny, reddish-black, and they do not damage wood at all.
3. Pavement ants and field ants. Small black or brown ants trailing along foundations, driveways, or kitchen counters. A nuisance, occasionally a sign of moisture, but not a structural threat.
4. Silverfish. Grey, carrot-shaped insects in bathrooms, basements, and closets. They like damp paper and cardboard, and they are a sign of excess humidity, not termites.
5. Wood rot and fungal decay. This is the most common culprit of all. A leaking window, a blocked downspout, or a wet rim joist will soften and crumble framing lumber in a way that looks exactly like insect damage. If the damaged wood is spongy and stained instead of hollow with clean galleries, you have a water problem, not an insect problem.
Termites vs Carpenter Ants: How to Tell Them Apart
If you catch the insect itself, the differences are easy to spot:
- Waist. Ants have a pinched, narrow waist. Termites have a thick, straight waist.
- Antennae. Ants have elbowed, bent antennae. Termites have straight, beaded antennae.
- Wings. If you find wings, ants have four wings but the back pair is noticeably shorter. Termites have four wings of equal length, and they shed them in piles.
- Damage. Termites eat wood and leave clean, mud-lined tunnels, plus mud tubes on foundations. Carpenter ants leave hollow galleries with coarse sawdust frass pushed outside the nest.
- Where you see them. Carpenter ants are routinely seen walking around indoors, including in winter. Termites stay hidden in soil and wood.

Could Termites Ever Show Up in Calgary?
Termites do not fly here on their own, but they can travel in wood. If infested lumber, firewood, or second-hand furniture arrives from British Columbia, Ontario, or the United States, live termites can come with it. In a heated Calgary building, a small colony can survive for a while, which is why imported wood is worth a quick look before it comes inside:
- Check for hollow-sounding boards, blistered paint, or thin mud smears on wood surfaces.
- Look for small piles of wings near windows or doors.
- Never store firewood or leftover lumber flat against your foundation or inside a garage wall.
There are still no known established termite infestations in Alberta. If you think you have found one, that is worth a professional inspection rather than a store-bought treatment.
What to Do About Suspicious Wood Damage
Work through this before spending money on any treatment:
- Probe the wood. Push a screwdriver into the damaged area. Soft, spongy, stained wood means moisture or rot. Hollow wood with clean galleries and sawdust nearby points to carpenter ants.
- Find the water. Carpenter ants need moisture, and rot needs water. Fix the leaking eavestrough, the cracked caulking, or the grading that sends water toward the foundation, and you remove the conditions that attract both.
- Look for activity. Frass piles, ants indoors in the middle of winter, or a faint rustling inside a wall are all signs worth acting on.
- Skip the termite products. Termite DIY kits sold online do nothing for carpenter ants, and termite treatments are simply not needed in Calgary.
- Call for an inspection if you find frass, hollowed framing near a window or door, or ants active indoors during winter.

Do You Need a Termite Inspection When Buying in Calgary?
No. Alberta home inspections do not include termite inspections because there is no regional termite risk. What is worth checking instead during a purchase:
- Moisture staining and soft wood around windows, doors, and the rim joist in the basement.
- Eavestrough and downspout condition, and whether water drains away from the foundation.
- Signs of carpenter ant activity: frass, hollow-sounding trim, or dead ants in window sills.
- Deck posts, garage framing, and any wood in contact with soil.
Those four checks catch the wood-destroying problems Calgary homes actually get. For more on warning signs, see when to call an exterminator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there termites in Alberta?
No established populations. Alberta's deep frost, low humidity, and short warm season prevent termites from surviving here, and no structural infestations have been recorded in Calgary.
Do I need a termite inspection in Calgary?
Not as routine protection. If you have found hollow wood, frass, or insects in a wall, an inspection is still worthwhile, because carpenter ants cause real structural damage and are common in Calgary homes.
Can I get termites from firewood?
Firewood from a termite region can carry live termites. Store firewood outside, off the ground, and away from the house, and burn it rather than storing it against a wall.
What does carpenter ant damage look like?
Smooth, hollowed galleries inside the wood, with coarse sawdust frass and insect fragments pushed out through small openings. The wood surface often looks fine until it is tapped or probed.
Is there termite treatment available in Calgary?
Not because it is needed. If you have found wood damage, the right treatment is virtually always for carpenter ants, combined with fixing the moisture source that attracted them.
