Spiders in Calgary: The 2026 Homeowner's Guide
Quick answer: Nearly every spider you will see inside a Calgary home is harmless. Spiders come in because their food comes in: ants, flies, silverfish and other small insects. Lasting spider control means sealing entry points, cutting the insect population they feed on, and treating the cracks, voids and ceiling corners where they live. If you are seeing spiders most days, professional treatment works because it targets the spiders and their prey at the same time.
Which spiders you actually see in Calgary homes
- Common house spider (Tegenaria / Eratigena): large, brown, fast moving, funnel-shaped webs in corners of basements and garages. Most active late summer and fall.
- Cellar spider ("daddy long-legs"): very long thin legs, hangs upside down in loose webs in basements, laundry rooms and bathrooms. Harmless, and it hunts other spiders.
- Wolf spider: hunts on the ground with no web. Wanders in from yards and garages in fall, and is fast enough to startle anyone.
- Jumping spiders: small, furry, active in daylight on walls and windowsills. Curious rather than aggressive.
- Cobweb spiders (Theridiidae): small, messy webs in ceiling corners, window frames and behind furniture.
- Sac spiders: pale, active hunters on ceilings and upper walls. This is the group most often involved in minor indoor bites.
- Western black widow: present in southern Alberta in sheltered microclimates such as garages, woodpiles, garden equipment and under siding. Uncommon in Calgary homes and very reluctant to bite. Never handle one with bare hands.
Do Calgary spiders bite?
Most spiders can bite if they are pinned against skin, but the usual result is a small, itchy red bump. No common indoor spider in Calgary has a bite that routinely needs medical treatment, and serious reactions are rare. Get medical help if a bite blisters, spreads, or comes with swelling, nausea or breathing trouble. Something important to remember: what people assume is a spider bite is very often flea bites, which cluster around ankles and lower legs, or simply hives.
Why you see more spiders in the fall
Calgary spiders follow the same clock every year. They hatch and grow through spring and summer outdoors, then the first cold nights in September and October push them toward warm, sheltered spaces. Open windows, garage doors and screen gaps become doorways. That is why a basement or front entry can seem fine all summer and suddenly have webs everywhere in October. Our Calgary pest calendar tracks this month by month, and fall pest prevention covers the season in detail.
The real reason you have spiders: their food supply
Spiders are predators, so a spider population is a symptom. If you have steady spiders, you have a steady insect supply: ants on the kitchen floor, silverfish in the bathroom and laundry, fungus gnats from overwatered plants, fruit flies, cluster flies near windows. Reduce the prey and the spiders thin out on their own. That is also why spraying spiders alone rarely holds, and why our treatment approach starts with what is feeding them. See silverfish control and ant control in Calgary for the two most common prey species in local homes.
Signs you have more than a stray spider
- Fresh webs in the same corners week after week
- Egg sacs behind furniture, in ceiling corners or in window frames
- Spiders on walls and floors most days, especially in one room
- Repeated small bites on ankles and lower legs (check fleas first)
- A visible insect population: ants, silverfish, gnats or flies
What actually works
Inside the home
- Vacuum webs, corners, baseboards and under furniture weekly, then seal and discard the vacuum bag
- Keep basements, laundry rooms and crawl spaces dry. Damp air supports the insects spiders eat
- Move cardboard, paper and fabric storage into sealed plastic bins. Clutter is spider habitat
- Pull shelving and stored boxes a few centimetres off the wall
- Shake out stored items, shoes and outdoor gear before bringing them in from a garage or shed
Entry points
- Seal cracks around window frames, door frames, thresholds and door sweeps
- Screen vents, dryer vents and open windows, including basement and bathroom fans
- Seal the foundation sill, utility and pipe penetrations, and any gap where siding meets foundation
- Keep shrubs, vines and planters off the wall. Trim vegetation back so it does not bridge to the siding
Outdoors
- Move woodpiles, planters and compost bins away from the foundation
- Swap exterior lighting to yellow LED or motion-activated fixtures. Bright white porch lights pull in the flying insects that feed spiders
- Keep the foundation zone clear of leaf litter and debris
What does not work
Foggers and "bug bombs" kill what they touch and then stop. They do not reach voids behind walls, they do not remove the food supply, and the spiders return within weeks. Repeated shelf spraying does the same thing. Sticky traps are useful for monitoring, not for clearing a problem.
What professional spider control includes
- Inspection of entry points, voids, crawl spaces and the exterior perimeter
- Crack-and-crevice and void treatment where spiders actually live, not just where they are visible
- Exterior perimeter treatment to interrupt the food chain coming in from outside
- Entry-point sealing recommendations so the result holds into the next season
- Timed around late summer and fall, which is when spider pressure peaks in Calgary

Frequently asked questions
Are the spiders in my Calgary basement dangerous? Almost never. The large brown house spiders and cellar spiders people find in basements are harmless. The only local species worth real caution is the western black widow, which prefers undisturbed sheltered spots outdoors and does not colonize living spaces.
Why do spiders suddenly appear in October? Cooling nights drive them indoors looking for shelter. It is seasonal behaviour, not a new infestation, but it is the best time of year to seal entry points.
Will a bug bomb get rid of them? No. Foggers reach only exposed surfaces. Spiders shelter in voids, behind baseboards and in ceiling corners where the fog does not penetrate, and the insect food supply is untouched.
How often should spider treatment be repeated? Most homes get a full season from one exterior and interior treatment. Homes with heavy insect pressure, mature landscaping or an ongoing silverfish or ant problem do better on a seasonal or monthly program.
Do the spiders come back after treatment? Some activity after treatment is normal as spiders move in from outside. Ongoing control is about entry sealing and keeping the prey insects down, which is why prevention matters as much as the treatment itself.
