Centipedes in Calgary Homes

House centipedes are common in Calgary basements, especially in older homes with damp foundation walls, in homes with floor drains and sump pits, and in properties near the Bow River, Elbow River and Nose Creek corridors where the soil stays wetter. They need humidity, and they need prey, which is why they are almost always found in the same rooms as silverfish, spiders and small ground beetles.

Because they hunt at night and move fast, most people only see one at a time, usually near a drain, behind a laundry tub or under a bathroom vanity. That single sighting is often the visible edge of a population living inside wall voids, crawl spaces and baseboard gaps. Spring and fall are the busiest months, plus any warm chinook stretch that pushes damp air through a basement.

Calgary Pest Guard treats centipedes by targeting the damp harbourage where they actually live, sealing the routes they use, and cutting off the prey insects they feed on. Without that last step, a basement that keeps producing silverfish will keep producing centipedes.

Why Centipedes Are a Problem

Thrive in damp basements, crawl spaces, floor drains and laundry rooms, and spread through wall voids and service chases

Signal a prey insect population — silverfish, spiders and small beetles are what they are feeding on

Alarming to see and fast enough to be difficult to catch, especially at night near bedrooms and bathrooms

Keep reappearing while humidity stays high and the food source is untouched

Our Centipede Treatment Process

Inspection of basements, crawl spaces, floor drains, sump pits, laundry rooms and bathrooms

Identification of the moisture source and the prey insects feeding the centipedes

Targeted treatment of damp harbourage areas, wall voids, baseboards and drain surrounds

Crack and crevice treatment of foundation gaps, pipe penetrations and service chases

Humidity control plan: dehumidifier sizing, drain drying and ventilation guidance

Follow-up visit to confirm the population has dropped and the moisture fix is holding

Centipede Treatment Cost in Calgary

Centipede treatment starts at $300. What moves that price:

  • How much damp harbourage has to be treated — one bathroom is a smaller job than a full basement, crawl space and laundry area.
  • Whether wall voids, baseboards and pipe penetrations need treatment, which is where centipedes travel between rooms.
  • Access to crawl spaces, sump pits and low or cluttered basements.
  • The prey insect population — if silverfish or spiders also need treating, the scope changes.
  • Building type — in multi-unit buildings, shared plumbing chases and neighbouring damp suites have to be considered.

Every centipede treatment includes the inspection, harbourage and crack treatment, and a written humidity plan for your basement. We confirm the price before we book. See our pest control prices for Calgary, read the centipede guide for Calgary homes, or call (825) 760-5364.

Centipede Control — FAQ

What kind of centipedes live in Calgary homes?

The centipede you see running across a Calgary basement floor is almost always the house centipede, Scutigera coleoptrata. It is grey-yellow with darker stripes and 15 pairs of long legs, and it moves very fast. The centipedes you find in garden soil, under stones or in mulch are soil and garden centipedes, which are shorter and slower and belong outdoors.

How much does centipede control cost in Calgary?

Centipede treatment starts at $300. That includes the inspection, treatment of the damp harbourage areas where they live, crack and crevice work, and the humidity and prey-insect plan that stops them returning. Call (825) 760-5364 with your address for an exact price.

Are centipedes dangerous to people or pets?

House centipedes have venom, but it is used on insects. Their jaws are too small to break human skin in most cases, and a bite at worst feels like a mild insect sting with a small red mark. They are not aggressive, they run away from people, and they are not a health risk to cats or dogs.

Are centipedes actually good to have in the house?

Honestly, yes, they are predators. A house centipede eats silverfish, spiders, cockroach nymphs, bed bugs and other small insects. The problem is what their presence tells you: centipedes only thrive where it is damp and where there is prey, so a steady supply of them means a moisture problem and usually another insect population in the same space.

Do centipedes mean I have another pest problem?

Usually. House centipedes need a food supply, and in Calgary basements that food is most often silverfish, spiders or small ground beetles. When we treat centipedes we inspect for those insects too, because removing the food source is what keeps the centipedes from coming back.

Where do house centipedes hide during the day?

Damp, dark and undisturbed spots: basement corners, floor drains, sump pits, laundry rooms, under bathroom vanities, behind baseboards, in crawl spaces and under stored cardboard or boxes. They hunt at night and can travel a long way through wall voids and service chases.

Will a dehumidifier get rid of centipedes?

It is the most important single step, but it is rarely enough on its own. Bringing a basement down to 50 to 55 percent relative humidity removes the conditions house centipedes need, and combined with sealing gaps, drying floor drains and treating the harbourage areas it ends the problem. In multi-unit buildings, humidity often comes from a neighbouring suite.

Do centipedes come inside in the fall?

Garden centipedes do. As the soil cools and dries, they move toward foundations, garage slabs and door thresholds, and some wander indoors. They usually die quickly inside because a heated home is too dry for them, but they keep appearing for several weeks during the transition.

How do I get rid of centipedes naturally?

Fix the moisture: repair leaks, dry floor drains, run a dehumidifier, ventilate the basement and crawl space, and stop storing cardboard and clutter against damp walls. Then seal foundation cracks, gaps around pipes and door sweeps. Reducing humidity and prey insects is the natural version of what a professional treatment does faster.

How long does centipede treatment take to work?

You should see a clear drop in sightings within one to two weeks of treatment, with the last few appearing as the population declines. Where a damp crawl space or a neighbouring unit keeps supplying humidity, a follow-up visit is included so the fix holds.
