Earwigs in Calgary Homes

Earwigs are one of the most common nuisance insects in Calgary from July through September. They overwinter as adults in soil, mulch and woodpiles, then become active in late spring and build up through the summer. By August a single mulch bed along a foundation can hold hundreds of them, and they move indoors looking for damp shelter whenever the soil dries out or the nights turn cool.

Calgary's dry climate does not keep earwigs away. Sprinklers, soaker hoses and air-conditioner condensate keep foundation soil and mulch damp through the summer, and window wells collect leaves and water that make ideal harbourage. In mature neighbourhoods with mature shrub beds, and in newer subdivisions where sod and landscaping went in recently, earwig populations build quickly close to the house.

Calgary Pest Guard treats earwigs where they actually live: the soil, mulch and voids along the foundation, the window wells, and the cracks and gaps they use to get inside. We combine the exterior treatment with practical drainage and harbourage fixes so the population does not rebuild in the same spot next summer.

Why Earwigs Are a Problem

Chew petals, leaves and seedlings in Calgary gardens, with the heaviest damage in July and August

Live in damp mulch, window wells and soil along the foundation, then move indoors when that shelter dries out

Arrive in numbers, often dozens at a time on a wall, doorstep or basement floor

Keep returning each summer as long as damp harbourage stays against the house

Our Earwig Treatment Process

Inspection of mulch beds, foundation soil, window wells, downspout areas, planters and door thresholds

Exterior perimeter treatment of the foundation wall and the adjacent soil and mulch where earwigs shelter

Crack and crevice treatment of foundation gaps, sill plates, vents and utility penetrations

Interior spot treatment in basements, crawl spaces and ground-floor rooms where earwigs are arriving

Entry point sealing and drainage recommendations, including mulch setbacks and downspout extensions

Follow-up visit on heavy infestations to confirm the invasion has stopped

Earwig Control Cost in Calgary

Earwig treatment starts at $300. What moves that price:

  • How much exterior ground has to be treated around the foundation, including mulch beds, planters and garden borders.
  • Window wells and basement access — wells full of leaves and a damp crawl space take longer than a clean perimeter.
  • Interior activity and how many rooms earwigs are reaching.
  • Building type — in multi-unit buildings with shared landscaping, adjoining beds and entry points need to be included.
  • Follow-up visits, included where the population is heavy and harbourage cannot be removed immediately.

Every earwig treatment includes the inspection, the exterior barrier and harbourage treatment, entry point sealing advice, and the drainage fixes that stop the population rebuilding. Earwig Control — FAQ

What are earwigs and why are they in my Calgary home?

Earwigs are reddish-brown insects, about 12-25 mm long, with a pair of pincers at the tail end. They are nocturnal and need damp, dark shelter, so in Calgary they live in mulch beds, window wells, woodpiles, downspout splash areas and the soil along the foundation. They do not nest inside your home the way ants or cockroaches do. They wander in through cracks, doors, window wells and basement gaps when the shelter outside dries out or gets crowded.

How much does earwig control cost in Calgary?

Earwig treatment starts at $300. That includes the inspection, exterior perimeter treatment of the foundation and adjacent soil and mulch, crack and crevice treatment of the entry points, and harbourage reduction advice. Larger properties, multi-unit buildings and heavy landscaping are quoted after a walkthrough. Call (825) 760-5364 with your address for an exact price.

Do earwigs pinch or bite people?

Earwigs can pinch with their pincers if you pick one up, and the pinch can feel sharp, but they have no venom and no stinger. They do not bite to feed on people, they do not spread disease, and they are not a health risk to your family.

Do earwigs damage plants and gardens in Calgary?

Yes. Earwigs feed on leaves, flower petals, seedlings and soft fruit, and they are a genuine garden pest in Calgary through midsummer. Chewed petals on dahlias, zinnias and roses, and ragged holes in vegetable seedlings, are the most common damage we see. They do eat some aphids and other small insects, which is the only useful part of their behaviour.

Why do I keep finding earwigs in my basement and bathroom?

Both are damp and dark, which is exactly what earwigs are looking for. Most indoor earwigs follow moisture: a weeping foundation crack, a leaking downspout, a wet window well or a humid crawl space. Treating the insects without fixing the moisture source means they keep arriving, which is why our treatment includes the drainage and harbourage fixes.

When is earwig season in Calgary?

Earwigs are active from late spring to early fall, roughly May to September, with the heaviest pressure from July into August. A wet spring and heavy watering produce a bigger population, and the first cool nights of September push them toward warm walls, doors and garages.

How do I prevent earwigs from coming back?

Pull mulch back 12 to 18 inches from the foundation, keep woodpiles, leaf litter and compost away from the house, clean out window wells, extend downspouts so water drains away, fix foundation cracks and gaps under doors, and switch exterior lights to warmer yellow bulbs that attract fewer insects. Reducing damp shelter outside is what keeps earwig numbers down.

Do earwigs live in Calgary apartments and condos?

Yes, usually in ground-floor and basement suites next to shared landscaping, courtyard mulch beds or planters. In multi-unit buildings we treat the exterior beds and the entry points, and where landscaping is shared we recommend the building include the adjoining beds in the program.

How long does earwig treatment take to work?

Outdoor numbers drop within a few days of the perimeter treatment, and most homeowners see the invasion stop within one to two weeks. Where the source is a neighbouring mulch bed or an untreated window well, activity can continue until that harbourage is cleared, which is why we include a follow-up on heavy properties.

Are earwigs dangerous to pets?

No. Earwigs have no venom and are not toxic to dogs or cats. A curious pet that eats one may get a mild mouth irritation from the pincers, but earwigs do not carry diseases that affect pets or people, and they are not a parasite like fleas.
